Prep tennis: Kalispell teams at Great Falls

It was Spring Break week up on the Flathead, and some of the players didn’t make the trip down from Kalispell for dual tennis matches against the Great Falls schools Saturday, but head coaches Bailey Lagge or C.M. Russell High and Jan Dodds of Great Falls High were able to get good looks at their charges in their season-opening matches.

They were pleased, to say the least. The Rustler girls blanked Glacier 9-0 and downed Flathead 8-1, while the boys tied Glacier at 5-all before dispatching the Braves 7-2.

The Bison took two from Flathead, the boys with an 8-0 shutout while the girls won 7-1. The boys scored a 6-4 win over Glacier, while the girls played to a 4-4 tie.

The Bison and Rustlers should have their full complement of talent Tuesday when they host the Helena schools, but Great Falls schools will be on their Spring break when school lets out Wednesday. On Thursday, the teams will entertain Conrad and Cut Bank.

“It was hard to tell how (the Kalispell teams) will turn out, because we don’t know how many kids they’re missing,” Dodds said. “but we’re doing pretty good. I was proud of them.”

The Bison, led by Abigail Davidson at No. 1 singles, swept all but one of their matches against Flathead, losing only in No. 4 doubles. They also won three of the four singles matches and the No. 1 doubles test against the Wolfpack.

The boys, meanwhile, got a slight scare when Miggy SanPedro had to go to a tiebreak to defeat Tristan Dills of Flathead in No. 1 singles, but went on to sweep the Braves. It was a different story against Glacier, with the Bison needing to win four of their five doubles matchups to salvage a victory after falling in three of the five singles’ tilts.

Defending state girls’ singles champ Lindsay Martinez scored a pair of wins with doubles partner Lindsy Pyette, while Lucia Barlecito, the new No. 1 singles for CMR, scored a win over Amber Hamblin of Glacier before falling against Jenna Jensen of Flathead. It was the Rustler girls’ only setback of the day.

Martinez and Mackenzie George will handle the No. 1 doubles starting this week.

The Rustler boys came back strong against Flathead, falling only at No. 5 singles and in a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles.
