Bobcat track stars honored by league

Montana State Track and Field brought in two more Big Sky Conference athlete of the week honors as Carley McCutchen was named Field Athlete of the Week and Heather Demorest earned Co-Track Athlete of the Week honors.

McCutchen kicked off the Mt. Sac Relays in California by breaking the school’s heptathlon record with 5,461 points, ranking 21st in the country. The senior placed in the top ten in five-of-seven events and moved up to number eight on the Big Sky’s top ten list. This is McCutchen’s second field athlete of the week honor this season.

Demorest earned back-to-back track athlete of the week honors, placing fifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:22.54. This is the fastest time in the conference thus far in 2015 and the 12th fastest in the Division 1 West Region.

Bobcat women’s tennis team finishes season

Playing its third match in three days, the Montana State women’s tennis team ran out of gas as Weber State handed the Bobcats a 4-3 setback Sunday afternoon in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.

Montana State opened play dominating doubles play sweeping all three matches for the first point of the afternoon. Among the MSU victories were a doubles victory by Molly Crum of Great Falls and her partner, Emily Tanner. They won 6-1.

Weber State answered taking four of six singles matches to earn the victory.

MSU received victories at Nos. 3 and 5 singles, respectively, as Jessica Brycki easily dispatched Dominique Beauvais 6-4, 6-0, while freshman Angelina Philippova held on for a 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 win over Emily Tanner.

“Heading into the weekend we knew we were up against a wall in having to win all three matches to make the Big Sky Tournament,” said MSU head coach Denise Albrecht, a Great Falls native. “It’s disappointing we didn’t get the job done, but playing the season with just one full-time starter from last year along with six sophomores and a freshman, and to battle with two teams that made the tournament down to the wire, gives us a good look for what the future holds. Hopefully, the things we learned this weekend will carry over into next year and make us a stronger team.”

Montana State finishes the season 11-13 overall and 4-7 in Big Sky Conference action.
