Family Promise fundraiser a success

Family Promise of Great Falls, an interfaith program to help the homeless in Great Falls, held its first-ever “Comfort Food Classic” fundraiser on Saturday night, which raised $7,800 for the nonprofit program to continue its efforts.

UGF students spending spring break working

On Saturday, six University of Great Falls students left for Puerto Penasco, Mexico, where they will spend the week building a home for a needy family.

UGF partnered with Amor Ministries for the project, with the program’s ministry to change the world, one family at a time. According to UGF, Amor Ministries has been changing people’s lives for more than 30 years throughout Mexico, South Africa and the United States.

These students will build a house in four days alongside the family without any power tools. The house will be an 11 feet by 22 feet two-room home with a concrete floor, two windows and a door. This year’s family earns a mere $112 per week to support their family and are currently living in a dilapidated camp trailer with a failing roof on the land they purchased, according to Amor Ministries.

“I chose to give up my spring break to go on the mission trip because I love to serve others. I have been blessed with so many things in my life, a house, family, food, and an education,” said Holly Moore, a UGF senior majoring in elementary education and special education. “There are so many people that are in need of help, and this short trip is such a great opportunity for me to serve and bring joy to someone else’s life.”

National school breakfast week in Great Falls

Great Falls Public Schools will be celebrating National Schools Breakfast week this week with free breakfast for a day at all of the elementary schools.

Every school breakfast served meets federal nutrition standards limiting fat, calories and sodium. The week-long celebration is aimed at increasing awareness of the School Breakfast Program among students and parents.

The 2015 National School Breakfast Week theme, “Make the Grade with School Breakfast” reminds everyone in the school community that a healthy school breakfast sets students up for a day of learning and academic success.

On Tuesday, free breakfasts will be served at Lewis and Clark, Chief Joseph, Lincoln and Loy elementary schools. On Wednesday more free meals will be available at Riverview, Meadow Lark and Mountain View, and on Thursday, Longfellow, Roosevelt, Sacajawea, Sunnyside and Skyline. On Friday, free meals will be available at Morningside, Valley View, West and Whittier.
