Prep Basketball: Thursday's HIT roundup

HAVRE – Great Falls High standouts Gabby Fought and LynDee Feisthamel combined for 25 points, but the Class AA girls fell to Class A 63-59 Thursday as the 29th annual Hi-Line Invitational Tournament got underway here at Montana State-Northern.

Dani Wagner and Morgan Mazurkiewicz of Havre scored 10 points apiece for Class A. Darrelyn Lefthand of Hardin scored 11.

In other games Thursday, Tyler Thompson of Laurel poured in 29 points as Class A boys defeated Class AA 70-69, and Keil Krumwiede of Glasgow scored 27 points as Class B boys knocked off Class C 104-95, and Angie Murnion of Winnett-Grass Range scored 17 as Class C Girls edged Class B 75-74.

Havre's Dane Warp scored 17 for the Class A boys, while AA received 17 points from Great Falls High star Matt Wyman.

The B Boys received 14 points from Rocky Boy's Cecil Lafromboise. Jason Thibault of Glasgow scored 11 and Brent Finn of Big Timber had 10. Chase Fossum of Glasgow also scored 10.

Class C was led by Cooper Olson's 20 points. Clayton Morsette Jr. and Monte Cayko scored 14 apiece.

The victory C Girls got 14 points from Britt Cooper and 13 from Paige Holmes.

The B girls received 16 points from Lizzie Klinker and 10 from her sister Natalie. They are from Fairfield.

The tournament, which features shot clocks and doesn't permit zone defenses, continues Friday with pool play. Six games are scheduled, starting at noon at the Northern Armory Gymnasium.

A 3-point Contest is sceduled for 6 p.m.

The tournament, which is directed by MSU-Northern head women's coach Chris Mouat and head men's coach Shawn Huse, concludes on Saturday with six more games.

A Slam Dunk Contest is slated at 3 p.m., followed by the Girls' Championship at 3:30 and the Boys' Championship at 5 p.m.

The HIT was started nearly three decades ago by Malta basketball advocate Babsie Bishop. The MSU-Northern community has organized and directed the tournament in recent years.

The tournament annually tries to collect some of the top boys' and girls' basketball talent in Montana, with four teams — one for each of the state's prep classifications.
