Owens wins first gold
Aug. 3, 1936 — Jesse Owens, of the U.S., won the first of his four gold medals at the Berlin Olympics as he took the 100-meter sprint.
Rare Cheyenne-English dictionary
Aug. 3, 1949 — The Montana Historical Society received one of only eight printed copies of the Cheyenne-English dictionary, created by a Swiss Mennonite missionary who came west in 1880. It is still used by researchers today.
