A father shot his daughter in the head and then shot and killed himself early Saturday near Lustre in northeast Montana, according to Valley County Sheriff Glenn Meier.

The girl remains hospitalized.

A call came into Roosevelt County dispatch just before 6 a.m. Saturday and a 16-year-old girl said her father, 62-year-old Raymond Rahn, shot her in the head and then went out and shot himself in the head, Meier said.

Since authorities from Roosevelt County in Wolf Point were closest, they responded with two deputies and two ambulances 13 miles north of Frazer on the Frazer-Lustre Road.

Roosevelt County notified Valley County authorities since the incident took place in that county, and Meier and two deputies responded.

Both the father and the daughter were transported by separate ambulances. The father died en route to the hospital and the daughter is at Trinity Hospital in Wolf Point.

The two were the only occupants of the home. Rahn's wife is in Seattle being treated for a disease, Meier said.

Authorities have not yet determined a motive and the incident is still under investigation, Meier said.

"It's a tragedy," Meier said. "A real tragedy."

He did not release the name of the girl.
