Sunday’s Regional Sports Briefs

Voyagers washed out Sunday afternoon

A cool, rainy Sunday was no good for baseball in the Electric City, as the Great Falls Voyagers and Missoula Osprey postponed their matinee contest.

The rainout makes for a two-day layover for the Voyagers, who have a scheduled off day Monday before continuing their homestand Tuesday with a mid-week series against Idaho Falls.

Sunday’s game has been rescheduled tentatively for July 24 in Missoula, where the teams will play a pair of seven-inning games in home-and-home format. The Voyagers said in a release that tickets for Sunday’s game can be exchanged at Centene Stadium for any other home game this season.

Former MSU football player Barnett dead

BOZEMAN – Former Montana State cornerback Eryon Barnett has died.

The Gallatin County Coroner’s office said Barnett died about 3:30 p.m. Saturday at a Bozeman hospital. The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported that a cause of death has not been determined. An autopsy has been scheduled.

A native of Euless, Texas, Barnett missed two games last November because of complications from pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas.

Montana State football coach Rob Ash says in a statement that Barnett always showed a resilient spirit that other admired. Barnett started nine games for the Bobcats in 2014, recording 37 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

Chargers B team wins consolation game

SPOKANE, Wash. – The youngest contingent of Great Falls’ American Legion baseball program took third Sunday in a high school freshman tournament.

The Great Falls Chargers B squad defeated the Red Bluff (Calif.) Bulls, 10-7, behind Dylan Bleskin’s complete game and 13 hits from the Great Falls offense. The Chargers led by as many as eight runs midway through the game. They went 3-1 over the course of the weekend.

Redbirds split twin-bill with Billings

BILLINGS – Lewistown’s Redbirds split a Sunday doubleheader with the Billings Blue Jays, taking Game 1 5-4 in extra innings before falling 3-0 in the nightcap.

Cordell Gallagher’s two-run double put Lewistown over the top in the 10th inning of the opener. Pitchers Andrew Lalum and Tre Bradley combined to scatter eight Blue Jays hits while allowing only two earned runs. Billings had the tying run on third when Bradley induced a groundout to win it.

Collin Hartford slugged three hits in the victory.

In the second contest, Billings got to Redbirds starter Luke Westbrook for two in the third and one in the fourth, and that’s all they would need. Blue Jays pitcher Dawson Smith went the distance for the shutout.

Eric Knox had two hits for Lewistown.
