Livingston man pleads guilty over dietary supplements

HELENA — A Livingston man has pleaded guilty to ignoring a court order to stop selling unapproved and mislabeled dietary supplements.

Toby McAdam appeared in Billings federal court Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty to one charge of criminal contempt of court.

U.S. District Judge Susan Watters sentenced McAdam to serve four months in prison and pay $85,000 in damages and fees.

Federal prosecutors dropped seven other charges under in a plea agreement with McAdam.

McAdam originally agreed in 2010 to stop selling unapproved supplements that claimed to treat cancer and other diseases. He continued to do so, prompting a civil contempt order in 2013.

Federal investigators filed criminal contempt charges earlier this year when they found he was continuing to sell the supplement Lugol’s iodine online.
