Seeding to harvest: A season on a Montana farm

In six months documenting farming on our family's place between Choteau and Dutton, I managed to wear the right shoes once. I filmed seeding in pumps, ripening wheat in my flipflops and only at harvest did I have boots along.

My brother, Scott, took over the family farm long after I stopped begging Dad for combine rides or tractor trips around the fields. Seeing my brother at the helm was jarring and hopeful, the farm continued to another generation.

He planted and harvested winter and spring wheat, barley, durum and chickpeas -- the makings of bread, cereal, beer, pasta and hummus. I tagged along to capture video of him at work.

And now I have to give up my teasing about how easy combining is with air conditioning, hydraulic seats and satellites.
