UGF men add JC transfer

University of Great Falls men’s basketball has added a junior college standout and Montana native to its 2016 recruiting class with the signing of Jared Schultz.

Schultz, a guard, spent the past two seasons at Blue Mountain Community College after a state championship career at Stevensville High School, in Stevensville, Mont.

As a sophomore with the BMCC Timberwolves, Schultz averaged 15.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.7 while playing over a 1,000 minutes. He was third on the team in scoring as a freshman, averaging just under 13 points per game, and became a go-to player for BMCC head coach Adam Ellis.

“Jared Schultz is the most consistent and coachable player I have ever coached,” Ellis said. “He comes everyday ready to compete. He has a unique ability to find ways to impact a game whether it be by his scoring, his defense or just making the right play at the right time.”

Schultz also had a decorated high school career. As a junior, he helped lead the Yellowjackets to a Montana Class A State Championship, and the team made it back to the state tournament the following year. Schultz was a two-time All-State selection and finished second in scoring in the Southwestern A division with 18.4 ppg.

Along with his high school basketball success, Schultz was also a member of the Idaho Select (now Montana Select) AAU team which featured a number of current NCAA Division I athletes.

Stroh to wrestle at MSU-Northern

Ben Stroh, the former star at Chinook High School, is transferring from University of Wyoming and will join the Lights’ wrestling program with one year left of eligibility.

Stroh, a two-time NCAA qualifier and All-Conference athlete, joins a youthful but talented squad coached by Tyson Thivierge, a team that took second at the NAIA national tournament in March. Stroh, who wrestled at 184 pounds with the Cowboys, went 62-28 with 20 pins.

Stroh was a four-time state champion for the Sugarbeeters. He went 156-2 during his high school career, including an incredible streak of 101 consecutive matches.
