Argo softball ends regular season with sweep

The University of Great Falls softball team made sure it will enter the postseason with a winning streak.

The Lady Argonauts (26-16) swept Carroll 5-3 and 4-2 in Sunday’s final regular-season doubleheader. UGF will be the No. 4 seed and take on fifth-seeded Southern Oregon in the Cascade Conference Tournament next Friday in Klamath Falls, Ore.

“Ending on a high note and beating a rival team gives us very good energy and momentum heading into the playoffs,” said UGF coach Joey Egan, whose team will compete in the Cascade Conference Tournament after earning admission to the conference earlier this year.

The Lady Argos closed out the regular season with a pair of victories over first-year rival Carroll on a cold afternoon at Multi-Sports Complex. UGF finished the season with a 9-3 mark against the Saints.

Kayeley Lyons smacked a two-run home for UGF and Alex Lowry slammed a solo shot.

Keeley Van Blaricom struck out five and allowed five hits to earn the victory in the circle. Lowry finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Van Blaricom also scored twice.

In game two, Chloe Cross homered for the Argos. Paige Bodner drove in two runs while Mindy Larson and Cross each finished with a pair of hits.

UGF will play SOU at 10 a.m. MDT Friday. The Lady Argos dropped a 4-1 decision to the Raiders in February.

Chargers sweep Gallatin Valley at Centene

Matt Garcia’s walk-off base hit led the Great Falls Chargers to a sweep of visiting Gallatin Valley Sunday at Centene Stadium.

The senior center fielder plated Jake Fisher, who doubled in the at bat prior, for a 10-9 Chargers victory. Great Falls won the first game 7-3.

Garcia was 2-for-5 in the game, his other hit being a two-run homer to left field. Fisher and Dawson Reiman each had a pair of hits in the nightcap as well. Reiman earned the win in relief.

Fisher was dazzling in relief in the first game, tossing 32/3 scoreless innings and striking out eight to earn the win. Daniel Bonilla and Isaiah Roberts each collected two hits in that contest.

Great Falls improves to 4-4 on the young season. The Chargers will go to Vauxhall Baseball Academy for a doubleheader Sunday, May 3.
