A man was charged with attempted deliberate homicide for allegedly shooting at his longtime partner early Friday, angry because the woman had been caring for her intoxicated brother.

John Huu Nguyen of Great Falls is also facing an assault with a weapon charge and misdemeanor partner or family member assault. He was scheduled to make an initial court appearance Friday.

According to court documents, Nguyen told his partner of 16 years that he was going to kill her and fetched a gun from the second floor of their Fox Farm residence. The report says Nguyen fired two shots toward the kitchen, where the woman was cleaning up. The woman reported running to the back of the residence and calling 911 just before 1:30 a.m.

The police report says an officer found a spent .38-caliber casing near the bottom of the stairs and a spent round lodged in a pillar in the breakfast area of the home. The pillar was in a direct line from the bottom of the stairs to the kitchen where a witness said the woman was standing. Court documents indicate live rounds were also found on the stairs, in the master bedroom and master bathroom.

Charging documents say Nguyen was found in his car at the 800 block of 10th Avenue South. He told investigators where he hid the gun, according to the police report. An apology note to his partner was found in her vehicle.

Court reports say Nguyen has no criminal history. The state requested bail be set at $100,000.
