Good News Roundup: Lots of awards

Education Association honors community and educators

On May 15, the Great Falls Education Association awarded several educators and community members for their support of education and activities for youths in the Great Falls Community.

The GFEA 2015 Outstanding Educator award was given to Jeff Rieger, who works as the Extended Curriculum Services instructor for GFPS district elementary schools. Also, the Golden Key of Professionalism award was given to Jolee Corey, an elementary teacher at Chief Joseph Elementary.

For community members, Mark Magers, owner of MaxStone Marble and Granite, was awarded the Silver Apple Award for donations to high school programs and for instructing students about art digital equipment used in building. The Lions Club also received the Silver Apple for helping provide eye appointments and glasses to school children as well as supporting the elementary school food pantry. Other awards are as follows:

Silver Key Award: Gary Copeland, Great Falls High; Shelli Lavinder-Schwalk, C.M. Russell High; Stephanie Olson, Chief Joseph Elementary; and Scott Mayer, Sacajawea Elementary.

Outstanding Faculty Representative Award: April Senger, Great Falls High; Shelli Lavinder-Schwalk and Tom Cubbage, C.M. Russell High; Scott Pasek, Paris Gibson Educational Center; Cheri Stordahl, Lewis and Clark Elementary; Jeremy Smith, North Middle; Karin Langbehn, West Elementary; and Pam Margaris, Loy Elementary.

Students receive journalism award

Two students were the proud recipients of the William O. Goggins Journalism Award this year. The award went to Heather Speaks Thunder of Blackfeet Community College in Browning and Danielle Vazquez of Stone Child College in Box Elder.

The Williams O. Goggins Journalism Award is named after the late William Goggins who passed away in 2006. The award is presented to graduating students who demonstrate promise in the field of writing.

Youth Advisory Board receives award

On May 21, the local Great Falls Youth Advisory Board was awarded in Bozeman with the 2015 Outstanding Community Program Award.

The Youth Advisory Board is composed of Natasha Walker from Great Falls High; Tyler Nicholson, Allie Phillips and Kendal Such from Central Catholic High; and Keagan Stroop from Belt High. The award recognizes the advisory board’s contribution to making a positive change in alcohol culture among today’s youths.

Lamping wins agricultural award

Katie Lamping of the Electric City FFA was presented the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award, sponsored by Monsanto Co., as announced Thursday, May 21.

Lamping received the award for her excellence in academics, leadership and agricultural work experience. She has also served as Chapter FFA Vice President from 2013-2014, as chapter president from 2014-2015 and has participated on the Agriculture Issues team. Her name will be recorded on a permanent plaque at C.M. Russell High School where she will be graduating this year from.

Update to May 2 GNR entry

Good News Roundup on May 2 listed winners at the Great Falls Music Teachers Association. In Intermediate Piano, Madeline Hamma was the winner and Mallory and Marissa Bosley were second place.
