Statue of Liberty’s cornerstone is laid

Aug. 5, 1884 — The cornerstone for the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal was laid on Bedloe’s Island in New York Harbor.

Mann Gulch fire

Aug. 5, 1949 — The Mann Gulch forest fire in the Gates of the Mountains north of Helena killed 13 firefighters and changed forever the way forest fires are fought.
