Aug. 30, 1963 — The “hot line” communications link between Washington and Moscow went into operation.

Train wreck disaster

Aug. 30, 1901 — One of the worst train wreck disasters in Montana and U.S. history occurred near Kalispell, when 28 cars broke loose from a train stopped for water and crashed into another train. Fire quickly engulfed the wreckage, and 34 people were killed.
