CMR volleyball team earns first victory

MISSOULA — Trisha Carlson and Josie Quinn combined for 15 kills and Kierstin Evenson had 22 digs and 2 ace serves as the C.M. Russell High girls’ volleyball team posted its first victory of the season with a 3-0 triumph over Missoula Big Sky.

The Rustlers of coach Theresa Besich won the match 25-16, 25-18, 25-23. Russell is now 1-2 on the season.

“The girls played very well,” Besich said. “We had a full team effort and everybody did their job. It felt like we had a home crowd because of the good team support. We came together as a team and when things got tough, we fought through. I’m very pleased.”

Madi Skawinski had 18 assists and 2 aces for the Rustlers. Gabby Hagen and Katia Michelotti combined for six blocks.

The Rustlers play host to Missoula Sentinel on Saturday afternoon at 2 at CMR Fieldhouse.

Gary Olson wins title at AQHA Show

AMARILLO, Texas — Gary Lynn Olson of Great Falls captured the world championship title in working cow horse at the 2015 Adequan Select American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show here Sunday.

Olson showed the American Quarter Horse Kai Bar Fletch, which he owns. The 2000 chestnut gelding, sired by Tanyas Kai Bar and out of Sheza Jae Bar, was bred by Jeanne Duffy of Kailua, Hawaii.

In the working cow horse class, 21 entries competed for world champion honors and a purse of $4,200. World champions received a prize package that included a custom-designed gold trophy; Montana Silversmiths buckle; WeatherBeeta embroidered horse blanket; specially designed logoed jacket, courtesy of Cripple Creek Outerwear; neck wreath; a medallion and 100 pounds of Nutrena feed.

The Adequan Select World is the pinnacle event for American Quarter Horse exhibitors ages 50 and over from around the world, who must qualify for the event by earning a predetermined number of points to compete in each of the classes representing halter, English and western disciplines. More than 1,150 entries from the United States, Canada and Switzerland are competing for 44 world championships at this year’s event, at the Tri-State Fairgrounds in Amarillo.

Van Diest on AM 560 radio Thursday

Carroll College head football coach Mike Van Diest will be among the guests appearing Thursday morning on a radio program hosted by Great Falls Tribune Sports Columnist Scott Mansch and 560 KMON Sports Director Jim Sargent.

The program airs every Thursday morning at 8:10 on 560 KMON-AM.
