Monday’s regional sports briefs

Freshman, doubles pace MSU

BOZEMAN Montana State freshman Linda Vink posted a pair of singles victories, while the Bobcats’ No. 2 doubles tandem also picked up wins as MSU dropped three matches in Texas over the weekend.

Vink, a product of Sint-Michielsgestel, Netherlands, won a pair of matches on the weekend, defeating Southern Methodist’s Mary Wright 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 at No. 5 singles, and Sam Houston State’s Caitlyn Mitchell 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot.

In doubles play, MSU’s No. 2 tandem of Laura Middel and Naomi Holopainen went 2-1, claiming victories over SMU 6-2, and SHSU 6-2.

Montana State will host North Dakota in the team’s home-opener on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 10 a.m., in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.

Carroll tracksters earn honors

Beaugh Meyer and Leah Esposito were named Frontier Athletes of the Week for their performances at the Mountain States Games in Pocatello, Idaho.

Esposito dominated the field in the mile run and tallied an altitude adjusted time of 4:53.38. She beat the second-place finisher by over eight seconds.

Her time is currently second in the country. She beat athletes from the Big Sky Conference and the WAC.

Meyer finished second in the shot put at the Mountain States Games with a time of 16.05 meters. Meyer defeated athletes from the WAC and Big Sky Conference.

Carroll, Northern ballers take weekly awards

Match Burnham, a center for the Carroll College men’s basketball team, took home the Frontier Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, scoring 39 points in a win over Rocky Mountain College.

The Spangle, Wash. native set a school record, going 19 of 19 from the free throw line and his point total was the best by a Saint in over a decade.

Natalee Faupel of the Montana State-Northern women also won the weekly honor, averaging 18.5 points and six rebounds in Skylight wins over Montana Tech and Lewis-Clark State.

Argo volleyball inks transfer

The University of Great Falls volleyball team has signed Junior College All-American Mariah Diaz.

The 6-2 right side hitter transfers from Feather River College in California.
