UGF wrestlers in Havre to meet Lights

HAVRE - The University of Great Falls and Montana State-Northern wrestling teams conclude the regular season with a dual match here Wednesday night at 7 at the Northern Armory Gymnasium.

Northern, which is ranked No. 2 among NAIA teams, will be looking for a sweep of the season series. The Lights of coach Tyson Thivierge edged the 14th-ranked Argos by criteria in a match on Nov. 12 in Great Falls. The teams tied 18-18 after splitting the 10 individual matches.

Total match points decided the outcome, with the Lights prevailing thanks to a 73-66 edge in that department.

The Argos of coach Caleb Schaeffer are 3-4 in dual meets this year, including a 24-16 victory over Embry-Riddle last weekend at McLaughlin Center.

The Lights are 6-1 in dual meets, including a 37-3 victory over Embry Riddle last weekend. Northern will also play host to national power Iowa on Friday night in a dual slated for 7 p.m. at the Armory Gym.

Lady Argos basketball signs two

The University of Great Falls women’s basketball 2016 recruiting class grew by two members with the signings of Erin Malcom and Cayden Diefenbach.

Malcom is a four-year varsity member of both the basketball and track & field programs at Regis High School in Salem, Ore. The 6-1 post won Oregon state titles as a starter for the Rams in both her freshman and sophomore seasons. As a sophomore she was honorable mention All-Conference and was second team All-Conference as a junior.

That year she averaged 11 points, nine rebounds, and three assists per game. Malcom also placed fifth in the state in the discus during her junior season and was named Most Outstanding Female Thrower for her team.

Diefenbach is a 5-9 point guard from from Omak, Wash. She is a four-year starter for Okanogan High School women’s basketball averaging 12 points and three assists per game.

As a freshman, she earned Honorable Mention All-Conference honors and was also voted team MVP. She was once again Honorable Mention All-Conference as a sophomore while helping lead the Bulldogs to a Conference, Sectional, and Regional Title. With Diefenbach at the helm, Okanogan High School added a Washington State Championship to their resume and Diefenbach was named First Team All-Conference.
