UGF teams in Billings, face RMC

The University of Great Falls men’s and women’s basketball teams continue their nearly monthlong road trip Thursday in Billings.

The men of head coach Anthony Owens, 10-11 overall and 3-9 in the Frontier Conference, and the women of head coach Bill Himmelberg, 16-8 on the season and 7-5 in league play, square off with Rocky Mountain College at the Fortin Fitness Center.

The women’s game, slated for a 5:30 p.m. start, pits the Lady Argos sparked by Nneka Nnadi’s league-leading 16.6 points per game, against the Bears of head coach Wes Keller. Whittney Mitchell (14.8 points per game) and Tenika Capouch (12.6 ppg), the conference’s leading rebounder, lead RMC, who sits at fifth in the conference at 5-7, 13-11 overall.

The Argo men have lost four consecutive games after defeating RMC back on Jan. 23. The 75-74 victory as won courtesy of an alley-oop slam by Malik Barnes in the final seconds. The Battlin’ Bears are 6-6 in conference and 15-9 overall. Rob Nyby, who scored 31 points in the loss last month, leads the conference in scoring at 19.9 points per game. Darren Lockett paces the Argos at 9.3 a game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30.

UM takes on Southern Utah

After losing four straight contests, the Montana women’s basketball team has found its footing with two straight victories, and will look to continue that streak Thursday night against Southern Utah.

The Lady Griz of head coach Robin Selvig, 13-9 overall and 6-5 in the Big Sky, travel to Cedar City, Utah, to face to Thunderbirds (2-19 overall, 0-11 in conference) at 7 p.m.

In the two teams’ previous meeting this season, UM earned a 66-60 victory behind 40 combined points from Kayleigh Valley and Lewistown product McCalle Feller, who is doubtful (ankle) for Thursday’s game. Valley needs just 30 points to surpass the 1,000-point milestone.

Travis DeCuire’s team, 14-8 overall and 9-2 in the Big Sky, split a pair of road games over the weekend and returns to Dahlberg Arena in hopes of retaining the top spot in the conference. The Griz take the court against Southern Utah (4-17, 2-9) at 7 in the evening. Montana holds the all-time series edge over the Thunderbirds, 11-5, after defeating them by double digits last month.

MSU battles Northern Arizona

The Montana State men’s basketball team has shown significant strides in Brian Fish’s second season as head coach.

The Bobcat men, 10-13 overall and 5-6 in league play, hope to continue that when it welcomes Northern Arizona (4-18, 2-9) to Worthington Arena Thursday night at 7. The Bobcats are coming off a 79-76 decision Saturday against Sacramento State.

The three-point triumph – the eighth single-digit win this season for MSU – gave the Bobcats 10 for the season, three more than a year ago, and their fifth conference win, one more than last season. In that victory, star freshman Tyler Hall became MSU’s top freshman scorer in school history and the fastest Bobcat ever to reach the 400-point plateau.

The MSU women, meanwhile, of head coach Tricia Binford are in Flagstaff, Ariz., Thursday to face NAU for a 6:30 p.m. jump at the Walkup Skydome. MSU and Eastern Washington enter this weekend’s slate of games tied for the conference lead at 10-1. The Bobcats are 17-5 overall, while NAU is 6-16 overall, 2-9 in the Big Sky. MSU defeated the Lumberjacks 86-77 earlier this season, overcoming a 17-point deficit in the fourth stanza to notch an overtime win.
