College basketball: Jake Wetzel signs with UGF Argos

Special to the Tribune

Jake Wetzel can score from a long way away.

But the Great Falls High star won't be traveling far to play college basketball.

Wetzel, a prolific 3-point shooter with known for his range, signed an NAIA letter-of-intent with the University of Great Falls Argos of head coach Anthony Owens. He averaged 9.2 points and 3.2 rebounds for the Bison last winter.

"I never really pictured myself staying in town and playing – or even playing at the next level," Wetzel said. "It's going to be good to play in my hometown with the fan support I have here, and become a part of the Argo Family."

Wetzel is renowned for his prodigious perimeter shooting abilities. He was 61 of 138 from the 3-point line for a .442 percentage.

"I want to add (3-point) shooting to the table this year," Owens said. "That's why I want to bring him on."

The Argonauts finished 17-12 last season and are looking to replace their top two perimeter threats – Marcus Hurn and TJ Harris – both of whom are graduating.

Great Falls High, coached by Bob Howard, reached the Class AA state semifinals after knocking off tourney favorite Missoula Hellgate in the first round of the state tournament.
