BRIEFS: Crippen wins State Am; Scarlets prevail in AA Legion

Maggie Crippen wins women’s State Am

HELENA – Maggie Crippen won her second women’s State Amateur golf championship Thursday, firing a 2-over-par 75 at Green Meadow Country Club to finish 54 holes at 221.

That was seven strokes in front of recent Kalispell Glacier High graduate Teigan Avery, who closed with a 74, the low round of the day.

Crippen, who plays for the University of Montana golf team, also won the State Amateur in 2011 when it was played at Bill Roberts Golf Course in the Capital City.

Defending champion Dorsey Addicks of Big Sky tied for third place at 232 with Jackie Mee, former Carroll College player.

In the Senior Division, Mary Bryson of Helena won her first state title, finishing with an 87 in the final round for a 249 total. That was two better than Jo Smith of Missoula and former champion Sue Matson of Laurel.

Lakers, Elks hanging on; Mavs fall

MISSOULA – The Kalispell Lakers and Lethbridge Elks both staved off elimination at the State AA Legion Baseball Tournament Friday afternoon, while the Missoula Mavericks were defeated 8-2 by the defending champion Billings Scarlets in the undefeated semifinal at Lindborg-Cregg Field.

Kalispell ousted the Billings Royals 14-8, while the Elks eliminated the Helena Senators 7-3, despite the Senators collecting 17 hits.

Lethbridge will face Missoula in a loser-out contest Saturday at 4, while the Scarlets face Kalispell at 7 p.m. The Scarlets are in Sunday’s championship regardless of Saturday’s outcome, but Kalispell will be eliminated with a loss.
