Five weirdly named fair foods
Let’s be honest. The fair is all about the food. But there’s more to the art of fair food than just putting something on a stick and deep-frying it (although we won’t turn that down, either). Here are some of the more unique selections from this year’s menus.
1. Fleischkuekle: Although it sounds like something you should respond to with “Gesundheit!” it’s actually a type of meat pie made with dough and (of course) deep fried. Get it at Stuff’d.
2. Rhyming Names: Several dishes on the food midway take advantage of the Dr. Seuss principle, giving us names like Kickin’ Chicken, Flyin’ Hawaiian, Pulled Pork Mac Attack and Chingalingas.
3. The Daisy Duke: No, you don’t need to talk southern or wear super-short shorts to enjoy this deep-fried caramel apple dessert from Prairie Pies. You also don’t need to shoot straight to order the cherry cheesecake version, The Calamity Jane.
4. Bacon Beef Sundae: Dear God, what is it?? Is it dinner? Is it dessert? How many cows and pigs had to die to make this Frankenstein’s monster of a meal? Find out at Bac-On Foods … if you dare.
5. Interesting Adjectives: It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s SUPER SPUD! With all those fixins, this is definitely the midway’s Spud of Steel. Stop and get some Crazy Fries to go with it. They’re delicious as long as you can get them out of the straightjacket first.
