Argo golf, MLCC hosts college meet

The Frontier Conference golf teams with gather at Meadow Lark Country Club Monday and Tuesday as UGF hosts the second league meet of the regular season.

Gina Kowalchuk, a junior out of Lethbridge, hopes it will be business as usual. Kowalchuk took medalist honors in the league’s first meet of the year, the Oredigger Invite in Butte, winning by two strokes. Buoyed by her performance as well as solid efforts from fellow junior Katie Buschhorn and freshmen Sarah Baxter and twin sisters Casey and Catrina Babinecz, the Lady Argos took a fourth place finish in Butte.

The Argo men came out of the eight-team field in Butte in fifth, with Paul Brannon’s 18th-place finish leading the way. Sophomores Taylor Kuntz and Cody Babinecz were 21st and tied for 23rd, respectively, while freshman Jonny Cielak was in a tie for 32nd.

The tournament starts at 9 a.m. Monday.

Americans rout Bulls, stay unbeaten

The Great Falls Americans skated past the Billings Bulls 7-2 in a NA3HL Frontier Division match Saturday night at the Great Falls Ice Plex behind two goals apiece from Tanner Congdon and Tegan Harrington.

Sandis Mezharaups put the Americans of head coach Jeff Heimel on the board just 1:21 into the contest, while Congdon made it 2-0 just over nine minutes later.

Congdon notched his second goal early in the second period, while Harrington and Adam Vandenbos also tallied scores in the frame.

The Bulls put up their first goal near the end of the second, and cut it to a three-goal Great Falls lead 2:15 into the third period.

Harrington and Hayden Moistner etched goals soon after to allow the Americans to pull away further.

Congdon, Matt Janke, Danny O’Donnell, Mezharaups, Harrington, Nathan Margeson, and Dustin Truex all recorded assists on the night.

The defending Frontier Division champs, 4-0-0-0 on the season, faces a two-game series against the Yellowstone Quake at the Ice Plex next Friday and Saturday night with both contests starting at 7:30 p.m.

Lady Argo spikers fall in three to Saints

HELENA – The University of Great Falls gave 19th-ranked Carroll College a scare in the middle game, but dropped their Frontier Conference volleyball match with the Saints in three games.

Carroll improved to 3-1 in league play and 14-4 overall with a 25-15, 25-22, 25-13 win over the Lady Argos (1-3, 7-10), the second straight loss for Arunas Duda’s club. By the same token, it marked the second consecutive win for the Saints.

Senior Madison Wilhelm was the team’s most effective and more efficient hitter, finishing with 14 kills on 33 attempts with 7 errors. She also led the team in digs for the sixth time in seven matches, this time with a total of 11.

UGF hopes to rebound this Friday when they travel to Lewiston, Idaho for an 8 p.m. match with Lewis-Clark State.
