Tribune Top 25: Flint Creek Titans making name for themselves

Who are those guys?

The Flint Creek Titans, we mean.

The co-op was created three years ago when tradition-rich programs at Philipsburg and especially Drummond merged. So while the Philipsburg Prospectors and Drummond Trojans are no more, the Titans of Flint Creek are very much alive and well.

And those guys are pretty good.

Flint Creek, coached by former Philipsburg star Mike Cutler, have moved into the Tribune Top 25 Class C poll thanks to a perfect 8-0 record. The Titans are No. 3 this week in our poll, behind unbeaten outfits from Belt and Forsyth, and appear to have one of the strongest defensive units in the entire state.

The Titans have yielded just 64 points this fall. That’s the same number as unbeaten Dillon, which is top-ranked in the Trib Top 25 Class A poll. The only teams in the state that have been more stingy defensively are Fairfield (29 points), Huntley Project (48) and Columbia Falls (55), and all three of those teams have played fewer games than Flint Creek.

The Tribune Top 25 poll, which tries to identify the top five teams in each of the state’s five classifications, is a weekly endeavor. There is just one change at the top this week, as previously No. 2 Westby-Grenora defeated then-No. 1 Wibaux 57-29 last Friday in a Six-Man game.

The other top-ranked teams in our poll this week include undefeated clubs from Billings Senior (Class AA), Dillon (A), Eureka (B) and Belt (C).

Class AA: 1, Billings Senior, 8-0; 2, Helena High, 6-1; 3, Missoula Big Sky, 6-2; 4, Helena Capital, 6-2; 4, Billings West, 5-3

Class A: 1, Dillon, 7-0; 2, Laurel, 7-1; 3, Hamilton, 7-1; 4, Billings Central, 7-1; 5, Miles City, 6-2
