Harlowton's Wasson finishing senior season in style

It was a special Senior Night for Harlowton’s Madison Wasson.

The multi-sport athlete for the Engineers had 15 kills, five aces and five blocks in her volleyball team’s three-set win over Park City.

“She played a great game,” Allison Jones said. “She really came out hitting hard and the other team just couldn’t block her. They couldn’t dig up her hits. She was just on fire. She was mentally focused and prepared and she played a great game. She made it easy for us.”

Jones, in her fourth season as the Harlowton head coach, said Wasson is one of the squad’s top leaders.

“She started out strong,” Jones said, “but she’s really began to carry the team quite a bit through the end of the season, which is great. She’s stepped up and is playing roles.”

The Engineers are having a successful season at 9-5 overall, 6-3 in conference.

The 5-foot-8 Wasson has played a big part in that, especially in recent weeks.

Jones said Wasson would like to be a physical therapist down the road.

She also competes in golf and basketball.

“I think she is most passionate probably about basketball,” Jones said.

Jones was asked for a lasting memory of Wasson’s career at Harlowton.

“Oh man,” she said. “Where to start? I’ve had this bugger since she was a sixth grader. I think her biggest thing is she is very determined and bullheaded in a good way, though. She’s a kid where you can get after her and she’s going to respond. She’s not going to shut down, which is awesome. You have a lot of kids who want to just curl up in a ball and cry when you get after them and she’s not that way. She will fight back and she will prove herself right or she’ll fix it and make herself better.”

Wasson was chosen as this week’s girls’ Athlete of the Week recipient through an online poll. Others nominated for the award were C.M. Russell High’s MacKenzie Dean and Rocky Boy’s Jaylynn Mitchell. All who have been nominated throughout the school year for Prep Athlete of the Week will be honored at the Great Falls Tribune’s third annual Northcentral Montana Sports Awards Banquet in the spring. The banquet and our weekly Athlete of the Week online voting competition are sponsored by Benefis Health System. Nominations for Athlete of the Week can be sent to tribsports@greatfallstribune.com.
